Astronomy Surrounds Us

This lecture is live at the Martz-Kohl Observatory and available online via Zoom. You are encouraged to come to the observatory to meet Phil Evans and join in our always lively Q&A after his talk. Later, we offer tours and, if the weather cooperates, viewing opportunities through the big telescopes. Dress appropriately for the weather as if you were outside. While the classroom is heated, the domes are not.

Astronomy surrounds us in books, magazines, movies, social media, and at various venues.  This informative talk by Martz-Kohl Observatory member, Phil Evans, will be breezy and fun for all ages. Phil will walk through time and history, stopping at key points along the way. Materials used in the talk may not seem astronomy related at first glance but will reference astronomy in interesting and sometimes humorous ways.  Phil mysteriously states that he will have free gifts… for those so inclined.  He is also confident that even the most “scientifically literate or illiterate” audience will enjoy this talk. You are encouraged to experience Phil live at the observatory.  This talk will also be streamed via Zoom.

Phil Evans is a retired county government employee and veteran of the United States Army. He is a student of history and collects stamps, coins and historical related materials. As for astronomy, he enjoys reading about how astronomy has impacted earlier civilizations such as by the appearance of comets and unidentified flying objects. Although Phil owns a telescope, he often prefers to use binoculars. He says that perhaps his most rewarding astronomical event to date was witnessing the great meteor shower of November 2001.

A non-member donation of $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students is appreciated but not required for presentations and events.  You can donate at the observatory or on our donation page. Thanks!
