Caldwell 41, better known as the Hyades, is the closest open star cluster to our solar system, located approximately 153 light-years away in the constellation Taurus. Because of its proximity, it does not look like a faint, fuzzy patch in the sky; instead, it appears as a prominent V-shaped group of bright stars that forms the "head" of the Bull. While the bright orange giant star Aldebaran appears to be part of this "V," it is actually a foreground star located only 65 light-years away, just coincidentally aligned with the cluster from our perspective.
The Hyades is a mature cluster, estimated to be about 625 million years old, and it shares a common origin and trajectory through space with the Praesepe (Beehive Cluster, M44), suggesting they both emerged from the same massive cloud of gas and dust. Astronomers categorize it as a "moving group," as its member stars are all drifting toward a specific point in the sky near Orion. Because the cluster is so spread out—covering about 15 degrees of the sky—it is actually a poor target for traditional telescopes, which have a field of view that is too narrow to capture its scale. It is best viewed through binoculars or even the naked eye, where its dozens of member stars can be seen scattered across the winter sky.
From Aldebaran: The Hyades are unmissable — they form the face of Taurus. Aldebaran marks the eye.
