About This Object

Caldwell 109, or NGC 3195, is a bright planetary nebula located approximately 5,500 light-years away in the constellation Chamaeleon. Positioned deep in the southern sky, it remains invisible to observers in the Northern Hemisphere, serving as one of the most significant "deep south" targets in the Caldwell catalog. Despite the name, this object has no relation to planets; it is a glowing shell of ionized gas ejected by a dying Sun-like star. As the star exhausts its fuel and collapses into a white dwarf, it sheds its outer layers into space, creating a luminous, expanding shroud that represents one of the final stages of stellar evolution.

The nebula exhibits a slightly elongated, oval structure that is actually a complex three-dimensional envelope of gas. Ultraviolet radiation from the hot central remnant star excites the surrounding hydrogen and oxygen, causing the nebula to glow with characteristic intensity. Expanding at several kilometers per second, the material in NGC 3195 will eventually dissipate into the interstellar medium over the next several thousand years. This process is vital to the cosmic cycle, as it disperses heavy elements like carbon and nitrogen back into the galaxy to be recycled into future generations of stars and planets.

This detailed view was created using FITS files from the Legacy Surveys DR10, with image credit to D. Lang (Perimeter Institute) and NERSC. By utilizing the high-precision data from this deep-sky survey, the image reveals the delicate, smoky textures of the nebula's outer edges and the brilliant concentration of light at its core. The portrait highlights the remarkable symmetry and fragile beauty of a stellar death, captured through modern astronomical processing to show the nebula in its full, intricate glory.
