DescriptionThe Archer stands at the very heart of the Milky Way, his arrow aimed at the bright star Antares to protect Orion from his eternal pursuer. This region of sky is the most spectacular in the entire Milky Way, packed with star clusters and nebulae — when you look toward Sagittarius you are looking directly toward the Galactic Center, about 26,000 light-years away. The constellation contains more Messier objects than any other — including the Lagoon Nebula (M8) and the Trifid Nebula (M20). The bright stars of Sagittarius form a distinctive asterism known as the Teapot, whose 'steam' rising from the spout traces the thickest part of the Milky Way.
AsterismThe Teapot: A very clear shape with a lid, handle, and spout.
